The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 bn AI videos.
Trial and Implementation
The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the coming weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift aligns with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by new AI video creators.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often illogical or bizarre.
“We know from our community that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to provide users the option to see more or less of that, according to their own preferences,” said a platform representative.
AI on the Platform
TikTok shared that there are now over a billion videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Overall, in excess of 100 mn videos are uploaded to the app daily, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its complete catalog.
User Control Features
Viewers will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the content preference option in the app and picking “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that currently be adjusted under the tool cover news, style, aesthetics, and dance.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its rules oblige content makers to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the app will from now on add an AI-generated watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This step is intended to stop users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.
Educational Initiatives
The platform is also launching a $2m awareness program for experts and organizations to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit educational bodies dedicated to training programming and robotics.
Platform Protection
The platform has supported its moderation strategy, following controversy over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in Britain. TikTok is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety division in London, with trade unions and digital protection specialists raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.
A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as swiftly, which is why a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
