Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
