Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also included experts in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
